The Final Issue of Music Emerging Magazine!
It's been a great journey writing and running Music Emerging Magazine. When I started it in the summer of 2015, I had a lot of free time on my hands and a lot less life stresses. I had only been in Los Angeles a short while, and life had not gotten as difficult as I would soon find out it can get navigating life in a large metropolis. I was very excited about starting this project, and soon I was traveling around, taking pictures, going to concerts and interviewing people, all new things for this country person who lived a fairly isolated existence for many years. I went to Joshua Tree, CA for the first time, and fell in love with this mystical desert place. There I conducted my first interview with Thomas Buckner, renowned baritone singer. I had no idea what I was doing-I had no experience, so I had to figure it out fast. I cherish that interview as it was such a rewarding and exhilarating time. I felt I captured a unique perspective of Thomas that was not already out there. Another interview I am so proud of, was my interview with artistic entrepreneur Chloe Trujillo, where I also learned the important interview skills of active listening. For that second issue, I got to conduct backstage interviews at Topanga Days and the Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Festival, music festivals in Topanga Canyon, CA, another first and milestone for me. There I met festival archivist Mary Ellen Clark. I got to go to her home and do one of my favorite things-looking through old pictures and archives. By the time I was gathering resources for the third issue, my life had changed. I had more responsibilities and stresses with day jobs and my activities as a busy musician. Getting together the third issue was so challenging. I also added a house concert series titled after the magazine, and that took a significant portion of time organizing. There were so many aspects of running a music magazine that I didn't feel I could do it anymore. I also had been working on my very old computer with its many problems; as I write this current issue, I am still plugging away on it, not being able to replace it just yet. I also moved several times, changed jobs and it just seemed that getting the third issue out became further and further away. I didn't want to just abort the work I had put into the third issue, so my attitude has been, "no matter how long it takes, I WILL put it out there eventually." You see, I started interviews and story collections for this special women's issue I wanted to put out, in September of 2016! I am sure the lives of the women I have interviewed have changed since I first collected these stories, and I do try to make an editor's note on such cases, as best I can. Again, I just want to get out this collection for you to enjoy...so officially, this third issue I"m calling the "Women's Issue". I asked some special women in music to give me their essays on the trials and tribulations of being a part of the music industry, in whatever form that is. Apart from essays, I also did interviews with women who: also run a magazine, an author and hit songwriter, musician, and a concert booker. Although I have given these women a title, each one is an entrepreneur. Speaking from personal experience, to do anything in the music industry means doing a variety of things, all in the name of running your own unique business. I hope you read and enjoy this final issue. I plan on totally revamping Music Emerging into a very special blog, which will hopefully become a great emotional resource for artists forging their path in the business of their art, or an inspiration to those who would like to. Stay tuned for the launch of that. I will continue to host Music Emerging Presents:, our concert series which is currently taking place every third Friday in Los Angeles at Jaraguá. Please join our mailing list to keep updated.
